African print in fashion-a word with Akua Berko
MABM (Maa Akua Berko-Mensah)
is a clothing label for all women of any shape and size. MABM was founded in
2011, as Berko tells us. Responding to the inquiry of how heritage influences
or inspires his design, Berko says “as a Ghanaian born and raised, my culture
and upbringing has the largest influence on what I design. Hence I use the
African prints.”
APiF: if your label was a
person, what kind of a person would it be?
Berko: that person would be
an optimistic woman with character and dreams.
ApiF: what is your favorite
closet piece in your collection and why?
Berko: I have a couple of pieces
which I adore. Ine is the Limelight from my new collection. I love it because
of its uniqueness and combination of the African Print and pastel cotton
fabric. Apart from that, it works well with it. It’s a pencil skirt and peplum
top.
People need to get fashion
collections easily and with comfort, at least. How do you market your design
and make them accessible to your audience out there?
Berko: I currently have a
Facebook page and a website which I use to showcase and carry some of my
ready-to-wear pieces.
Berko: my advice is that no
one should bring you down. Have less room for obstacles and rather focus on
your dreams and aspirations. It may not be easy, but as long as you have the
capability to place yourself in a position of making it, no matter what, you
will still make it.
ApiF: plans for this year?
Yeah, this year is great for
us to move higher. We have a major show-Africa Fashion Week New York expected
to take place on 13th July, where we shall be showcasing our new
outfits and collections. In September, we shall also take part in a major show
in Las Vegas Ankara Festival and some of our collections will be available for
sale.

African fashion in new shape
The days when settling on a
skirt that was too baggy around the waist because it fits around the hips may
be facing an edge for many African women. Thanks to mother-and-son team who are
cracking a sizing system that is conforming to the black women unique contours.
“The shape of the clothing
in the shop doesn’t solidify, compared with the shape of An African woman”
Fikile Nxedlana says over the phone from Vunula fashion workshop (Her House) in
Durban.
Ask most of the African about
fashion and they will tell you,
from a mother of sixty, that since they were teenagers, if they are lucky to
get an outfit that was fitting, that would either be a fitting top but
unfitting bottom. Either it’s too baggy or stands out at the back such that you
can never find pants. Jamal Nxedlana agrees with this wholeheartedly “the
problem is usually the hip-to-waist ratio”.
Western patterns have no
room for natural hourglass figure. Facing facts, women have more dramatic
curves than what the stores suggests.
It’s through such things
that young fashionista, styled with the likes of Loyiso Bala and Spoke
Mathambo, and his traditional mother have teamed to create new label called the
misshape. The label was instantly aimed at the young professionals, boasting
chic silhouette courtesy of Jamal and new sizing system, a basic reality of the
African measurement, developed by Fikile.
“I
would buy clothes and change them” discloses Fikile. “Soon
I was modifying all my friends’ outfits. I then took a design course and
started to make clothes. That is what inspired me to push Jamal and let people
know that there is a market here. In trying to correct the patterns, I came up
with new ways of working things out.”
Fikile
creates the look while the mother creates the pattern. He chooses the fabric
while she produces the outfits at her factory. It’s the same place that she trains
the unemployed women to help them make a living out of fashion.

Fashion Show in Ghana - One Week Event
Maybe the fashion show in Ghana which is held approximately one week event is a common event for the African fashion lovers. This fashion event allows the fashion designers, brands or houses to show their latest collection and ideas of African fashion. People can take a look or get inspirated with the latest fashion trends presented by the designers. Most importantly, for some industry can know what is "in" and what is "out" of the fashion season.
Many teenagers, women , and men can get the latest fashion trends as they're the fashion trends followers. The most reputable fashion show as one week events are held in the four fashion capitals around the world. They are Milan, Paris, New York City, and London.
We already have the arise magazine fashion week such as Africa Fashion Week in London and Africa Fashion Week in New York. The great progress of African Fashion is that African people have started to encourage themselves to be a host of their own Fashion week that is held in most every part of Africa though there were only a few parts of Africa which held the Africa fashion week; Swahili, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Ghana fashion week.
Amazingly, there would be some great designers : Coccolily, Christie Brown , etc on the next year that I do believe will bring so much colors on the Fashion Industry in Africa especially in Ghana.

On fashion, beauty, and anything in between
And I woke up this morning with my head reeling off with a lot of wonderful things to write about – a sure sign that I am finally getting back to the cyber world after a long and tedious hibernation. I have suddenly felt a sudden vigor to be back on my tracks with a surprising urge towards productivity that had been dormant for these past few days. Yes I am back to blogging about my favorite topics: fashion, beauty, and anything in between.
We are all indeed blessed with the potential to be amazing. I used to believe that success only comes for those who labor and I was dubious about the fact that victories can happen to be painless. Yes you can find success on fashion, beauty, and anything in between if you believe in yourself, and that doesn’t have to hurt. Okay, I acknowledge that I’m sounding a bit too eccentric. But do you know that the promise of beauty or the sense of fashion fuels a desire to appreciate human nature even better? With that conscious state of mind, anything from a simple mix and match to power dressing can bring out the success in you.
There will be continuous ramblings on fashion adventure and misadventures as well as beauty experiments and successes. The many great things about being a woman are a nook on its own and it is great to be one. With the many choices and hurdles that we face, decisions toughen us for the long haul ahead. The feeling of contentment doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple thoughts and simple things, they can totally be amazing when coupled with the right mix of inspiration.
And this is why, something as trivial as a thought of a blog, matters. It can transform into a myriad of other thoughts altogether – like inspirations on what to wear the next day, keeping up with the latest fashion trend, finding options to look even more beautiful and feeling good about it. Thoughts on fashion and beauty is endless… the journey continues… and it would be fun if you join me in this adventure.

Apples or Pears?
Because not all women are born with a very well proportioned body, I want to feature some styles that are fitting for some specific body types. If you are bottom-heavy or top-heavy, then this feature is for you. Be your own stylist and never allow those extra pounds to keep you from looking good and flattering. Now take a closer look at yourself (while stark naked) in a full-length mirror and determine your own body type.
Flatter a Bottom-Heavy and Top-Light Figure (Pear Shaped Figure)
- Put more focus upwards. Look for flattering necklines and bright hues to accentuate the upper body. Other great options for the top half are prints, stripes, plaids, and floral. Keep the lower half in solid and dark colors.
- For fitted suits, go for fitted jackets that end down to the widest portion with structured shoulders. Opt for form fitting bottoms that are not clingy and not tight.
- Wearing jeans can flatter your figure. Go for the boot-cut leg opening that slightly flares downwards. This creates a striking balance to wide hips and full thighs. Choose dark washed jeans and avoid embellishments at the back pockets. Pair it with high heels for an ultra flattering and thinner look.
- For dresses, opt for full skirts with a fit and flare silhouette. Go for strapless dresses to draw attention to your upper half. Other option for those with a lot fuller hips and thighs is to go for the empire-waist, or raised-waist dresses.
Flatter a Top-Heavy and Bottom-Light Figure (Apple Shaped Figure)
- Think minimalist for the upper half and accentuate your bottom half. Avoid wide and high necklines. Go for V-necks, scoop and sweetheart necklines to give out a lengthening effect for the top portion. Avoid breast pockets and heavy embellishments around the chest area. Keep tops in solid and dark colors.
- Give your bottom extra emphasis with flared cuts and A-line skirts for a more balancing act. Choose flat front flared pants and skirts that are low rise. High waist bottoms only draws attention to your large chest area.
Whichever is your body type, there’s always a dress, a suit, a pair of pants that can flatter your figure. So play up with your best assets and down play with the problem areas.

Dress Up, Thin Down
Dressing up to look a lot thinner is one of the ways many of my chubby friends are gloriously indulged in instead of the usual crash diet and work outs that other girls might go for. So for those of you who want to learn the power of fashion when it comes to looking slender despite the extra weight, then this is for you. Here are a few tricks I learned to looking 20 pounds thinner:
- Look light in black! Try to match your separates with an all black ensemble and see how you can look a lot slender in them. Check out how Raven Symone looks hot in an all black figure flattering mix-and-match of belted tunic over slimming leggings and a pair of boots. Spice it up a little with some stylish accessories and you've got the sizzling appeal.
- Go for wide belts. Wide ones have more slimming effect that those thin ones. Pick those with a nylon stretch that makes a comfortable fit.
- Dress up in the right proportions. Create a balance with every wardrobe that you want to wear. For miniskirts, match it with a longer top. For wide leg pants, match it with a fitted top. Never go for over-sized outfits – it can only make you look bulkier instead of trying to hide the problem areas.
- Be confident in red. Yes, red can make you look sultry and bold. It is a color that can give you that extra boost of confidence. Now imagine yourself in a red dress just like Jennifer Hudson.
- Make your face look slimmer by pulling your hair up and away from your shoulders. For rounded face, wispy bangs can do the trick. Other hair dos that work best in thinning down the face are chunky highlights on the sides, loose curls, and body waves.
- Wear the most flattering heels with jeans. See how Raven rocked her look with jeans, sheer top, and the great heels. Another plus is the nude color heels that makes the perfect slimming footwear complement. The nudes work best on bare legs, try these nice heels with knee length skirts. So if you are aiming to look taller and leaner, work it out with comfortable heels.
Dressing up is just one way to looking good. A healthy work-out and proper diet is always nice to maintain a slender frame. So think about it… make dressing up a start of a journey to a beautiful you.

How to Wear a Maxi Dress
Great lengths are making a striking comeback this season. In true bohemian fashion, spice up your wardrobe with fabulous maxis that can be pulled off in an instant. The glamorous combination of floor-grazing hemlines and vibrant prints brings together a look that exudes confidence, elongates the figure, and provide an excellent balance of modesty with subtle sultriness. With minimum effort, this lengthy frock can create a maximum impact. Anyone can rock a maxi, young and old, tall and petite, slim and chubby. So don’t worry, there’s always a maxi for all shapes and colors.

For casual occasions, wear your maxi dress with a flattering or embellished sandal for a summery look. If you need to put on some height, try wearing a nice fancy wedge. For formal occasions where you want to be dressier, then the stiletto is the way to go. Just make sure that the floor-sweeping length doesn't really drag the floor, otherwise, you will look real sloppy or be in a total disaster.
With the maxi’s long flowing silhouette, important details are embodied on the upper half of the dress. Usually, the top portions are fitted on the bust or on the waist. Thus, when choosing a maxi, make sure it fits your upper body perfectly. Make sure the bust area is about the right size to avoid dragging the entire dress down. For strapless maxis, watch out for bodice that makes the perfect fit – too tight makes your skin pop out from the sides and too loose only means trouble.
Never go overboard and tacky with your maxi. Maxi dresses makes a statement from its long silhouette and elegant prints, so don’t go for more ruffles, bell sleeves, bows and more fancies. Do not overkill with accessories like fedoras, furs, or funky beads. Retro and maxis just don’t blend well. If you want to accessorize, think modern and chic. Sleeker accessories can update the maxi look with effortless drama.
Maxis are ultra refreshing and breezy. It can go overtime from formals to casuals. It is simply an all-season staple, so never hesitate to wear one! A touch of make-up and nice colored nails along with your maxi, and you’re all set to go.

Dauntless in Animal Prints
Animal prints can take you to a whole new adventure with fashion. We see them now and we have seen them before, simply put, animal prints just never go out of fashion. To some, it takes one to be wild and bold to wear them. To me, I should say, it’s fun and trendy to wear one. It’s how you wear them that make a difference.
Depending on your personal taste, you can rock this look with an impressive statement. For the super trendy, going all out is easy. But for those who are still doubtful if they can pull it off, then small doses of prints might help to get you started. There are a variety of ways to getting a spectacular look; you can try the prints from scarves, bags, dresses, tops, skirts, and shoes. Animal prints are obviously found in almost every fashion item you can think of. And we can get a lot if inspiration from runways, magazines, streets, and from our favorite celebrities.

You can wear animal prints any time of the day for any occasions. For special occasions, make a cool attitude by making the print as the focal point of the wardrobe. For daytime affairs, tone it down in pieces that you can wear with denims. For a more casual occasion, try wearing it with shorts or oxfords. At the office or night affairs, wear it with a blazer. If you go for the printed heels or bags, then tone down your wardrobe to neutrals or classic black in simple cut.
Tiger prints, zebra prints, leopard prints - you can be uniquely stylish in whichever print that suits you. By the way, African Fashion has a lot of prints to brag about. Have fun with prints and be the fashionista that you are!

On the Bright Side
It’s a bright day today and I can’t help but be amazed at how a bright sunny weather can bring a refreshing and enthusiastic aura. A punch of pink, a zest of yellow, shimmering floral, and a hint of teal… aren’t they just the colors that sets the mood for a beautiful day ahead? Don’t they just bring a smile, a boost of your confidence, and a picture perfect glamour? Now, don’t pass up with the coveted trend of colors, lift your spirit up and try on the cocktail of bold dresses in chic styles that are amazing for everyday and party get-up. With a few inspirations from my favorite celebrities and models, cheers to these shining examples on how to get the bright stuff absolutely right.
Yellow has never looked so sublime! Simply dazzling in a yellow shift dress, Taraji P. Henson gives this bright shade a lively spin. Pulling of a yellow hue is made easy with a nonchalant yet sexy cut, but never ever overdo with the style and fabrics. It’s a shade that shouts fun, playful, and stylish, so don’t be afraid to try it.
A bright floral dress is just ravishing for any occasion. Thandie Newton is simply elegant with a summer and spring staple that never goes out of fashion. Floral is sweet and romantic but try to tone down the brightness with a hint of black or neutrals just like this simply styled dress.
Steal a glorious moment in teal. Fashion accents in teal always look fresh and stunning. This pleated dress is just an amazing ensemble in a show-stopping vibrant shade.
Hot pink can make you look even hotter! Summer will be in full swing soon and embrace the warm weather in this pretty hue. A touch of pink never fails to exude femininity and alluring charm. Solange is just sizzling hot in this fuchsia sultry cut number.
A dash of color from time to time can give you an exciting fashion experience. If you are constantly in neutrals and blacks, then it’s about time to surprise yourself. For more choices on the bright side, check out a few dresses online.

A Dose of Inspiration
What makes you look forward to waking up in early mornings? To a teacher, it could be seeing her pupils learn how to read and write. To a doctor, it could be seeing her patients heal and recover. To me, what inspires me on Monday mornings? Working in the corporate world may not be as rewarding as being a doctor or a teacher, and sometimes mornings can be a totally drab routine of rushing to work. So what makes waking up a totally new and exciting experience?
Simple as it is, I make dressing up in the mornings an interesting event instead of being an obligatory routine to start the day. I dress up for myself because I find it as a liberating experience to express myself in fashions that are defined by who I am. Every day is a reason itself to be happy and have fun. Finding the right dress to work is just a head start, ultimately it sets the mood for the entire day. Trust me; if you feel good with the way you look, no one can put you down. You may think it’s trivial to dress up, but its effect is quite soothing much more than you realize it, it has that uplifting effect on women!
So think about how you can load your wardrobe with stuff that makes waking up worthwhile. Make shopping for the right clothes as an investment instead of just mere impulse. Choose those that make you feel pretty and happy. Give yourself time to look for bargains and search online, whichever suits you. This is something that you owe yourself after a hard day’s work.
For my friends in Afrawear, I’m pretty sure each morning is a new day to celebrate African fashion and share this passion with other sistahs out there. It is in knowing that with a piece of an item sold, it means that a child in Africa can eat three times a day. It is always inspiring to read a beautiful slogan to greet each morning: Buy a Dress and Feed an African Orphanage. Isn’t that great?
What about you? What makes waking up an exciting experience?

The Feather Fashion
Feather-in-the-hair look has invaded the fashion world with such rave that the demand for feathers soared so high and I never once expected it would turn out to be this hot and trendy. Feather clip-ins, hair extensions, headbands, and earrings top the list of fashion must-haves recently. And since many celebrities are always seen wearing the feather style, it has swept the fashion world to a new global trend.
I just love the way the feathers has gone more colorful, brighter and bigger! See how the lovely plumage made these celebrities look in even more in style. A striking touch of hot pink gives Gwyneth Paltrow an ultra dose of youthful flair. Garcelle Beauvais hit of blue looks bold with a playful aura. The single flight of feather gives Vanessa Hudgens a jolt of exotic and breezy feel. Drew Barrymore simply looks glorious in a dash of long plumage.
Feathers on hats are not yet lost in regal fashion. If you have seen the royal wedding, you would know what I mean. Fedoras and feathers carried the timeless charm that never seems to fade through time. However for yuppies like me, that seemingly vintage tradition is fitting for formal occasions. And since I want something wearable for everyday, feather-in-the-hair trend is more interesting.
This trend is ethereal, chic, and colorful – feathers make a statement that is unparalleled. It comes in different colors and patterns giving you that one-of-a-kind feel. With a myriad of options to choose from, finding the perfect hue to complement our hair color and complexion is never a problem. Mix and match of dresses and tops are also made easier and fun. Whether you want to look retro or punky or alluring, feathers can help you do the trick. All-natural feathers with remarkable quality can even keep up with hairdryers, washing, and curling irons. I just hope that prices don’t go sky high now that everyone I know wants to jump in and join the trend.
So would you style the feather way? As for me, I would definitely go online shopping for the vibrant feather earring like Garcelle’s!

How Technology Revolutionized Fashion Reality
Online shopping experience has really kept me up so late last night and I’m still craving for more. I was not actually splurging online, I was enjoying the moments of “window shopping” at the comforts of home. This is the marvel of technology – “if you can't bring me to your store, bring your store to me." I must admit that this innovation has really made my life easier and my closet always updated. It’s amazing how I can actually feel a dress on me by just viewing how the dress hangs and looks virtually.
Technology has emerged to virtually revolutionize almost every way we do things from banking to service offerings, and the fashion world has become a part of that reality. Social e-commerce like Facebook and Twitter has proven to come out as two of the most popular and most viewed sites aside from Google. Blogging also allows designers and consumers to go personal with anything they could possibly talk about fashion (like what I am doing now!). The World Wide Web has a lot to offer and we are in for the ride!
Apart from using computer solutions, fashion retailing is without a doubt also going mobile. Businesses and designers have taken advantage of the interactive feature that technology has to offer. Ultimately this will elevate the face of fashion to a more advanced ways of connecting designers direct to consumers in order to seize the opportunity to keep up with what’s in and what’s not. I’m pretty sure that in many years to come, fashion is headed to an even more technologically heightened era. Imagine how you can just visualize dress up and the next day it is right on your doorstep?
For a whole new shopping experience, why not start now? Try my trusted site on African Fashions and you will surely fine something that fits your personal style. With just a click, you are one step ahead of improving your wardrobe!
What are you doing to stay ahead in fashion? Share your thoughts on mobile apps or other ideas where an innovation in fashion has changed your life in any way.

How to Dress Like Tyra Banks
Dress like Tyra and rock that supermodel / host look that exudes poise and confidence. Since I have been featuring her consistently in my last two blogs, so I might as well write something that is solely dedicated to capture the way she dresses. I love the way how she influence fashion and absolutely adore how she changes people lives.
Tyra’s fashion sense is a wonderful mix of simplicity and elaborates. In casual occasions, she can look nonchalantly elegant in jumpsuits with a touch of fashionable belt and pretty colorful pumps. To look fierce casually, she likes to play with leggings, sheer tops, and bold wedges. She can also look strictly businesslike with a pantsuit paired with a tailored blazer or tuxedo inspired dresses. She is often seen in belts of varied styles from simple to bold details which she wears together with jumpsuits and sophisticated skirts.
Her red carpet fashion is always dazzling in floor length embellished gowns in sheath silhouettes or refreshingly sweet tones in knee lengths with nice shoulder details. She pairs it with remarkable high heels and luxuriant clutch and she’s all done and pretty. During her shows, she can be amazingly donned with a variety of fashion statements that can range from a figure-skimming white dress to basic black pantsuits to a play of African prints.
To pull off a look that’s truly Tyra, you have to maintain a flawless skin and well toned body. So always make it an effort to stay fit, eat right, and a regular dose of exercise. Hit the gym and develop your own healthy beauty regimen.
Remember that the best way to be like Tyra is NOT to copy the way she walks in the runways or the way she dresses, it’s when you stand up tall and confident, ready to face the world. It’s not just about the clothes; it’s about how you carry it that means everything. Be the person that you are, beautifully inspired and fabulous in your own way – believe and live it! The right attitude towards life is something that Tyra always advocates in her shows, true beauty is skin deep, it is the beauty that can make you glow from inside out.

Part 2: In a Romantic Way
The Dramatic Look
As promised, this is the sequel to the blog I had previously on the romantic fashion. This time around, I will walk you through or maybe take you to the mood for the romantic make-up. With a light gust of air and a major dose of inspiration, this is going to be an enjoyable experience. A romantic look on African Americans comes with the natural aura of amorous grace expressed in dramatic eyes highlighted with defined curved lines of the sensual lashes and the dramatic lips that focus on colors that speaks playfulness and elegance.
So to be more vivid as I play up with the tips and tricks on getting the romantic look, I searched the web for a picture of Tyra Banks to demonstrate my point (she’s simply just one of my favorite, so I picked her as my example). Here she goes, isn’t she just mesmerizing and dramatic?
How can you get that look?
First off, you must be able to create a dewy face. If you have circles around your eyes, cover it up with a light pat of concealer. Just a tad amount and careful blending can do the trick for an even look. If you must use a foundation, then go easy with a sheer one. Use a slightly lesser amount than your usual using a brush and sponge. Make sure it is the right color that complements your tone and undertone. Up close, it should be as natural and flawless as possible – not caked on and covered up, so go easy on the base. For a more natural look, you can opt to let go of the foundation, instead use a dusting translucent powder to make you look fresh and glowing all throughout.
For a youthful glow, go with shimmery liquid or loose shimmers on the temples, subtle up on the brow bone, through the center of the nose, and slight on the chin. Generously apply baby pink blush on the apples of your cheeks. Try darker pinks if your tone is darker than Tyra. Caution: Loose shimmers are romantic but loose glitter is a disaster. So be careful when you have to be all out gleaming.
Check out Tyra’s eyes. This is the best time to dazzle and shimmer in a romantic way – but take caution in the blending. Give that extra glow from the lash lines up to the brow bones using a crease brush. Go with shimmers in the shades of pinks, peach, taupe, amethyst, and creams. Forgo the eyeliner, curl your lashes, and go with the mascara. Apply two coats to get those super sexy lashes. Trick: Let dry the first coat before going for the second one for a more effective flirty coat.
Waive heavy and thick lipsticks - go for the shimmery shades of pink, berry, and apricots.

Fashionable Scents
I’m going to veer a little wayward from my usual fashion blogs today. It’s been a long and tough week and I want to do something light and scented. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive bottle that makes you smell good; finding the right scent for you may only mean exploring every scent there is possible (may it be from that nearby drugstore or the posh store!).
Oftentimes, we don’t just get noticed because of what we wear, we get the most complements because of how good we smell. A perfume can be an attention catcher. It is the invisible and mysterious proportion we add to our wardrobe creating a haunting beauty that keeps people wondering what has crossed them.
First, you have to know when to wear perfumes. If you intend to go to the cinema and you are forced to sit with other people for hours, please have the decency to wear something very very light to leave some air (or go scentless if it’s really jam-packed). People might just hate you for wearing that strong Poison! If you are going to a party, give yourself an ideal touch up of that fruit-cocktail fragrance. If you are headed for work, but it might depend on which type of work you have, imagine the aura that you want to project – it can be the fresh one or it can be the intellectual one.
Try not to stick to your usual paradigms when it comes to perfumes. Say, if you are flirty and want to smell flirty all the time then that makes your boring. Try to surprise yourself by wearing something floral and fresh! If you are the luxuriant one, try something you think is not too pricey. And if you are the most feminine one, try something more masculine. Who knows, your new scent might just be the best one that works for you.
Don’t just buy a perfume because you liked it on someone else, get one that satisfy your liking and what it does to your moods and how it suits your lifestyle. So whenever you think of the perfect dress to wear for that occasion, never forget to wear that seemingly invisible piece of fashion – the fragrance.

Endless Possibilities on Fashion Mix and Match
Mixing and matching fashion essentials are one sure way of enriching our wardrobe, plus it is one of the most economical ways of enhancing our outfits without hurting our budget. It is just a matter of being creative and knowing when to coordinate colors, fabrics, patterns and styles. Putting up a terrific look is not difficult and can be something even more gratifying. You will be surprised with yourself at how fun it can be and how different and interesting some looks can become even if you have been using them a dozen times already.
For completely different looks every day, I have some few favorite ideas to help you get the most of your money and (sometimes limited!) wardrobes.
-The upper part of the body usually gets noticed more than the bottoms, so even if you wear different pants or shirt everyday but you wear the same cardigan (or same shade), then your everyday attire looks the same. Yes you were mixing and matching, but you forgot the basic element that people notice more. So in choosing tops, build up with the basic solid colors and move forward with the prints and patterns.
-Patterns and prints go well with a complementary solid colored top or bottom. It can be tricky to mix and match them, but if you have loaded up on the basic colors, that wouldn’t be so difficult. You can always create and recreate a charming number by matching a graphic skirt with any other neutral or solid color top.
-Dresses can be very difficult to do mix and match, but an equal amount of accessories like belts, scarves, and jewelries can completely transform the dress. Plus always remember to style your hair differently every time for an added twist of variety.
If you are planning on shopping for dresses and fashion accessories any time soon - explore the many possibilities of choosing those that can build the basics and enhance the essentials. One unique item that you can mix and match with a dozen pieces in your wardrobe will certainly give you a more versatile edge.

Dress Up with a Scarf
Scarves have always enamored me in so many ways. It is some sort of magic on how a piece of fabric can simply transform an outfit to an entirely new look and appeal. Scarves can be made of any fabric and can come in a multitude of colors, patterns, designs, and sizes. In ancient times, a scarf was not always used to make a fashion display or as piece to add warmth, it was of symbolic importance to society and military. Its meaningful past has found its way to this day. There are just a lot of things and endless possibilities we can do with it and the innovation never stops.
Cut the Chill
Keep warm while holding the look of understated elegance by wrapping your neck once or twice with a scarf. You can also try different variations of twists to come up with something stylish that can complement any necklines. A well chosen scarf will not only keep you warm, it can add a zest of personality and artistry to your wardrobe while keeping you chic and comfortable all through the breezy months.
A Jolt of Color
When you don’t need more warmth in the summer months, a brightly colored scarf can be used as a belt to liven up a pair of casual shorts or jeans. It can instantly jazz up and add a touch of color and versatility to that boring bottom. Are you fond of bold colors but you’re afraid to pull off a dress or top swathe with it? A vibrant scarf in any color of your preference over a black or neutral wardrobe can finish that look just as perfectly.
The Perfect Wrap
Whether you need a good wrap to protect or hair or be simply stylish, a good scarf will serve its purpose aesthetically. You can either wrap it around your head and tie a knot behind the ear and let the ends of the scarf fall gloriously through the shoulders. It’s simple, stunning, and effortlessly sophisticated.
Do you know of many more ways to use a scarf? Post something; I would appreciate your ideas. Check out Facebook for a wide selection of the scarves. For the latest trends on African Fashions, check also Twitter.

Fashion Myths Unveiled
Believe it or not but some fashion myths have been with us through the ages and try as we must, “avoid” or “adhere” to them at all cost. Logically, they can be true but wait until you try it and you realize, “it’s just a myth after all”.
-A black dress is for everyone. Yes, it’s a color of sophistication and confidence. But well, if you’re black and you don on all black, that’s utterly boring and muted. So liven up, try some solid bold colors. Or if you really must wear black, accessorize!
-Women of weight should avoid horizontal stripes. We’ve heard it a million times. Okay, so you gained weight and you thought it’s downright unflattering. How about you give it a try now and tell me if I’m bluffing? You’d be surprised at how good it can be on you.
-Always match shoes with bag or belt. That should be an age old story accepted by our mothers. But hey, that’s gone wayside now. There are so many shoes out there, do you just want to pass it up coz u don’t have the perfect bag or belt to match with it? How about matching your dress with your shoe or your bag?
-Long skirts and long skirts make you look bigger. But truth be told, it can actually make you look slimmer and taller.
-Long dresses aren’t for small, petite women. Well, check out some famous petite stars who have mastered this style. Long dresses that reach down to the ankles are simply sophisticated and you certainly wouldn’t want to pass up on it because of your height. Try to stick on light and silky fabrics and pair it with those lovely wedges and you’d be just stunning!
-Sequins and sparkles are only for the night. The shimmering fabrics are just as eye catching and glamorous for the day as it is for the night. But be sure to layer it with plain basics. Take it down a notch under a jacket or cardigan or choose those tops with sparkles at the neckline.
Many of these myths (or should I say rules) have been going around for decades now. It’s all up to you to challenge it and let’s say experiment. And to start off, try out some cool stuff from my sistahs in the fashion business.

When Less is More
Part 2 on Fashion Blunders
More often than not, as we see people sashay across us, we take notice of their fashions sense, and little did we know that we also fall prey for this kind of thing. Now what I am talking about? There is what I call the beauty in minimalism. I’m no fashion maven, but isn’t it obvious when too much means too much? Elegance is neither trendy nor fussy, and making a statement is not just a parade of everything we have in our closet, it is the beauty that is timeless and chic.
I have already featured in my previous blog a few fashion faux pas to avoid, there were pointers on flattering colors, prints, accessories and embellishments. And since my sistahs love them, here’s a few more:
Too Much Patterns
Now try to imagine yourself in a herringbone pattern skirt matched with alternating squares of colorful top? While we see that on others, please oh please, that is very very difficult to pull off. So try matching your favorite pattern with one or two solid color. Don’t try to satisfy every trend in one go coz that might just be silly.
Too Much Colors
Too many colors are eye catching but also draw major trouble. So here’s a hint that always works for me. Try to use the color wheel. Complementary colors and analogous colors are the best color combo or trio that works all the time. Complementary are those colors that are opposite each other in the color wheel: typical ones are orange and blue, purple and yellow. So to look intense and bold, try some complementary colors. Analogous colors are those that are right beside each other in the color wheel like yellow-green, green, and blue green. These colors can give you a look of total freshness, coordination, and excitement.
Too Much Fabrics
In the language of fabrics, there are those that never meet half way. So if you can simply keep your summer and winter wardrobes away from each other, then you’re all set.
Now while I’m admittedly a minimalist, in the true sense of fashion, there is always a matter of style and design that calls for simplicity and excesses - because the future of fashion should be something without limitations and restrictions on whatever potentialities. So for the champions of minimalism out there, we are in the same boat, and for the avid maximalists, convince me why I should try and experiment that kind of style. Your style could be more interesting, so take a stand, post something coz I really want to hear your thoughts.
By the way, we have online resources that can show you what’s big on fashion now. Check out also facebook and twitter to get a grip on what’s new with African-American Fashion.
