Black in the Runway

While African fashion and African fabric has invaded the fashion industry, the black women has rocked the runway over the last four decades.  Through the years, racial diversity has played a major role in reflecting a world of reality.   The early 70’s was the breakthrough of the black women in the runway.  Black women became the most sought after models, making heads turn and selling myriad of fashion wears in the runways of Milan, Paris, New York and Tokyo.  In the 80’s they are the most wooed, coveted and worshipped fashion models among designers.  Black projected drama, strength, elegance, and brought about new meaning to a designer’s collection.

Now let’s name a few top black supermodels that have paved the way for African-American icons in the fashion world – Naomi Sims, Beverly Johnson, Pat Cleveland, Iman, and Mounia.  These women were ethereal in the runway, breaking grounds, and creating history for the African-Americans.  In recent years, the black women that have graced the high fashion runways and made a niche in the industry were: Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Jourdan Dunn, Selita Ebanks and Chanel Iman. These women not only invaded the runway but have rocked the cover of Vogue magazines and invaded the show business as well.  Just recently 9 Black Models have graced the Vogue Italia February 2011 edition.
